Youth wrestling season winds down

Madison's Youth Wrestling program had a busy winter with many participants in tournaments through the season.
Last weekend, the district tourney was held in Howard. Madison sent 31 wrestlers to compete, and 21 advanced to the Region Tournament which will be held this Saturday in Brookings.
The youth program grew this season. Josh Kearin, head coach, was helped this year by Jay Mennis, Brian Appelwick, Darren Swenson, Steve Williams and several parent volunteers. They hosted a triangular with Sioux Valley and Dell Rapids; the youth competed as a team with no individual awards given.
Madison also held the annual Dale Waba Tournament and had the opportunity to wrestle against youth from West Central before the varsity action at Madison Square Garden Night.
In addition, the youth wrestlers had a day of swimming and pizza.
The regional tournament in Brookings will be held at the Swiftel Center starting at 10 a.m. on Saturday. The top three there will advance to the state tournament.
