City of Madison Recycling Reminders

Please note that all recyclable materials within Madison and Lake County (no matter the garbage service provider) must be bagged in clear or white bags. Anything in black or colored bags will be refused at the point of collection or refused at the Madison Recycling Center. Also, materials need to be separated as follows:

Bag 1. OFFICE PAPER, colored or white, clean and dry.
Bag 2. NEWSPAPER and all NEWSPAPER INSERTS, JUNK MAIL, ENVELOPES, MAGAZINES, CATALOGS and PHONE BOOKS; clean and dry.
Bag 3. PLASTIC CONTAINERS (with #1 or #2 imprinted on the bottom) and TIN, ALUMINUM, and STEEL CANS; empty, clean and dry.
Bag 4. CHIPBOARD and CARDBOARD, cardboard does not have to be bagged but must be flattened, clean, and dry.

Plastics, other than #1 or#2, and glass are currently not recyclable. Those items should be disposed of with your household garbage. Dirty items or items that contain fluids are not able to be recycled. Please rinse all containers and allow them to dry prior to bagging. Cardboard that contains food particles or grease is not recyclable and should be disposed of with your household garbage.
