Classroom Management
A to Z Hints
A
Attendance – a successful school experience is the responsibility of the children, the parent and the school. Your child’s progress, both academically and socially, is influenced to a great extent by daily participation. Regular attendance without tardiness is a key.
Arrival – the suggested arrival time for children is 8AM. If your child will be absent or tardy, please call the school at 605-427-0109. If your child needs to leave during school for an appointment, please send that information on a note or call the school.
B
Backpacks - please provide a backpack to help your child carry materials, messages and information to and from school. Have your child share the contents of the backpack with you daily.
Bathroom – Please have your child go to the bathroom before coming to school. This way we don’t need to take as many bathroom breaks during the day.
C
Clothes – Each day we will go outside to play. It is important that your child dress appropriate for weather conditions. Label all items with your child’s name.
Conferences – Parent/Teacher conferences are held in November and February. We will be discussing your child’s accomplishments, strengths, and overall progress. Please feel free to schedule additional conferences at any time throughout the year as needed.
D
Discipline – If a child is acting inappropriately in the classroom, I will first remind the student of the classroom rules, if the student continues to misbehave I will then write his/her name on the board. After a student has their name on the board, they no longer get any warnings. Instead, I will put a checkmark by their name and they have to stay in from recess 1 minute for each checkmark.
Dismissal – At 3:10PM, I will exit with the class to the playground. If your child is being picked up, I will wait with him or her. If possible, please let the school know if you are going to be late or send a written not if your child’s “going home” routine will be different. Please discuss these arrangements with your child.
E
Extra Clothes – It is very important that you send an extra set of clothes (shirt, pants, underwear, socks) in case of a bathroom accident or a messy spill. This way we do not have to bother you at work or home. Label each item, put them in a plastic bag and keep them in your child’s bookbag.
E-mail – You can contact me at school via our e-mail address: rachel.miller@k12.sd.us Please keep in mind that while I try to check my email daily, it may not be until the end of the day. Please call if it’s urgent!
F
Folder (R.E.D.) – R.E.D. = Read Every Day! Please look through this folder each day and discuss any items with your child. Please send the folder back to school each morning with any signed notes/permission slips, notes from you, etc. This is where I will look for any items from home.
G
Gym – Our class will have one 30 – minute gym class each week. (See schedule) The children are asked to wear sneakers and PE shirt on this day.
I
Illness – The question of when to keep your child home from school is often a difficult one, especially when decisions must be made first thing in the morning. It is important, however, to keep your child home if he/she is ill. This helps to make them more comfortable and prevents other from becoming ill. Children function more effectively in the classroom when they are healthy.
J
Journals – One strategy that will be used to help convey the concept that print conveys meaning is the use of journal writing. In these journals the students combine their emerging writing skills with their drawing skills. As the children are exposed to a variety of phonics and reading experiences, journal entries will move from drawings and inventive spellings towards more conventional writing.
K
Kindness – students in our classroom are encouraged and expected to treat all members of our class as well as others with kindness and respect. Hitting, fighting, bullying, name-calling, and making fun of others will not be permitted.
L
Library – Each Thursday, after PE we will go to the library for an hour. There the students will be allowed to check out one book. Library books must be returned the following week.
M
Music – Music is held on Mondays from 2:15PM to 2:45PM
N
Newsletter – It is very important that you read the school newsletter each week. There will be valuable information in the letter such as, milk carriers, upcoming events and cleaning schedules.
P
Parental Support – Your support of school activities makes your child feel important and sends the message that you value school. Parent volunteers are very important!
R
Report Cards – Report cards will be sent home with your child.
V
Visitors – Visitors are welcome in the classroom. Please let me know in advance (if possible) so that I can check our schedule and advise you of any changes.
W
Weekly Jobs – You will find a list of “job descriptions”. The job is for 1 week and then we will rotate to the next one on the list.
Z
ZZZ – Make sure that your child gets plenty of rest. Setting and keeping a bedtime is a wonderful gift you can give to your child. It will help them be alert and read to learn each day!
Job List
Floor – makes sure all the big things are picked up off the floor and the floor is ready to be vacuumed.
White Board – makes sure everything is erased off the white board, unless the teacher instructs the student to leave something up there.
