Madison Bulldogs Earn the State Championship

For the first time ever, the Madison Bulldogs have won the State 11A Football Championship! The Madison Bulldogs beat the West Central Trojans 28-21 on Thursday night, November 12th at the DakotaDome in Vermillion, SD.

The Bulldogs scores came from three TD passes from Mitch Hansen to Mason Leighton and then a 1-yard run by Brodie Frederiksen late in the fourth quarter.

Hansen and Leighton connected on scores of 9, 76 and 44 yards. The 76-yard catch was an 11A title game record. Frederiksen rushed 24 times for 114 yards during the game.

Hansen completed 12 of 18 passes for 220 yards. Leighton caught five passes for 169 yards.

The Bulldogs (12-0) led 21-0 after three quarters but the Trojans (10-2) got within 21-14 before Madison added a TD set up by 40-yard run from Hansen.

West Central quarterback Dan Skinner led two long scoring drives in the fourth quarter. He finished with 274 yards passing and two TDs to Jonah Rechtenbaugh.

This was Madison's third straight trip to the title game having lost the previous two, one of which was to West Central.

West Central's only two losses this season were to Madison.

Madison will celebrate their first ever championship with a welcome home today, Friday, November 13th at 10am at the Madison High School Gym. The event is open to the public.
