Jason Crisp - IRONMAN

FAST! If a single word had to describe Jason Crisp, that would be a good one. Jason, fitness coordinator at The Community Center and IRONMAN triathlete, recently completed in the IRONMAN Arizona 2009. He had some impressive times to be sure.
Approximately 2800 triathletes began the AZ IRONMAN on November 22 at 7 a.m. with cool morning weather conditions and raw nerves.
The IRONMAN distance triathlon consists of three components in the race. The 2.4-mile swim took place in the Tempe Town Lake. The water was a cool 62 degrees that morning, leaving many athletes struggling to even move and walk going into the next stage of the race. Crisp completed the swim leg in 1 hour, 10 minutes "I was pleased with the swim despite a strained rib muscle," Crisp commented. "I was able to avoid a lot of contact in the water and got into a good rhythm. The water temp didn't seem too bad while swimming but, after exiting the water, I got extremely cold since air temps were still in the low 50s."
The second stage of the IRONMAN occurs on the bike. Triathletes rode 112 miles (3 loops of 37-some miles) through Tempe and surrounding areas. Crisp was finished with this leg of the race in 5 hours ,22 minutes. Crisp chose one word to describe his displeasure with his bike efforts that day: disappointed. "I had some bladder issues and had to stop five times to use the restroom losing about ten minutes. Aside from the bladder problems, I felt fairly good."
The final stage of the race is a 26.2-mile marathon. The athletes ran around Tempe Town Lake and through parts of Tempe to perform this last portion of the triathlon. Many athletes ran in hot weather during this time. Crisp ran the 20th fastest marathon of the day with a 3 hour, 16 minute run. "The run seemed to go by really fast," says Crisp. "There were a lot of spectators, and I had family and friends there to cheer me on. That helped me out a lot!"
When asked for his overall thoughts on the race, Crisp was happy with his performance. "One of my goals was to break ten hours, so that was cool! The best part was having family and friends there cheering me on! This race really got me motivated to resume training after the new year for Ironman Lake Placid in July! My number one goal there will be to qualify for Hawaii! I know it’ll be tough, but that’s part of the fun!"
A typical week of training for Crisp consists of 15 to 30 hours on training; 10,000 to 13,000 yards of swimming; 100 to 200 miles of biking; 30 to 45 miles of running. His daily routine consists of eat, work & eat, train, eat, nap, work & eat, train, eat, sleep, repeat. A breakdown of his workouts might look something like this:
Monday: swim 3500 to 4500 yards
Tuesday: bike 25 to 35 miles with a 20 to 50 minute run afterwards; strength training 30 min
Wednesday:swim 3500 to 4500; bike 20 to 30 miles
Thursday: run 1 hr to 1 hr 45 minutes of speed work, hills, or other specific run training. Strength 1 hr
Friday: optional day off or swim 2000 to 3000 and/or bike 10 to 20 miles easy
Saturday: swim 1500 to 3000 yards; bike 80 to 130 miles; run 20 to 50 minutes
Sunday: run 1 hr 20 minutes to 3 hours; bike 20 to 30 miles easy; weights 1 hr
Some of Jason's favorite quotes: “Never give up, for that is just the place and time that the tide will turn” and “Success comes from consistency.”
We want to give our congratulations for Jason Crisp for an exemplarary performance at the Ironman Arizona 2009 and wish him much continued success with his future endeavors.
