Bulldogs celebrate basketball season with awards

The Madison Bulldogs, the two-time state basketball champions, held the end of the year banquet on Wednesday at Madison High School.

Madison won the most games in school history (25) and the most games in a row (14). The Bulldogs made 150 3-pointers and grabbed 850 rebounds -- both school records.

Individually, Michael Sullivan attempted the most 3-pointers (183) and made the most 3-pointers (82) in a season. He tied the record for the season-high 3-point percentage (45 percent).

Sullivan, a junior, has made more 3-pointers -- 110 -- than any other Bulldog.

Senior Derrick Wiebe ended his career with the highest field goal shooting percentage (62 percent). He made 343 shots out of 557 attempts.

"It was nice to have a chance to get together one last time as a team to celebrate all of the things that we accomplished as a team during the 2009-2010 season," said Coach Michael Ricke. "This season was special in a lot of ways, and this is a great way to officially put an end to it."

Wiebe, Sullivan and Mitch White were named to the All-State Tournament Team and were named All-Big 8 Team members.

Cam Shafer received All-Conference honorable mention.

"The banquet also gives us an opportunity to recognize some of the individuals who received postseason awards. We had a very special team this year, and while we won our second straight championship in total team style, it's still nice to recognize individual players at both a local and state level," said Ricke.

Team awards

Wiebe was named Most Valuable Player.

Sullivan was named Offensive MVP.

Senior David Schreiber was named Defensive MVP and Blue Collar Award winner.

Junior Mitch Benson was named Most Improved Player.

Freshman Tyler Wiebe was given the Scout Team Award.

Mitch Manthey was given the Mr. Hustle Award.

Coca-Cola Playmaker awards

Shafer was given a Coca-Cola Playmaker Award for scoring 19 points, pulling down eight rebounds and dishing out eight assists against Flandreau Indian School on Jan. 19.

Manthey scored 12 points and pulled down seven rebounds in Madison's win over the Flandreau Fliers.

White torched Harrisburg by scoring 32 points, grabbing six rebounds and dishing out seven assists on Jan. 26.

Sullivan stepped in the semifinals of the state tournament with three consecutive 3-pointers in his 23-point night.

The Bulldogs will attempt to go for the 3-peat in the 2010-11 season.
