Twenty-six Madison girls' basketball players are getting ready for the opening game of the 2007-2008 basketball season. The Lady Bulldogs will head north to take on Hamlin Thursday night.
This season is a season of firsts. First-year head coach Mat Nelson takes the helm this year, taking over for long-time coach Chris Shaffer. So far, Nelson has been impressed with pre-season practices.
Last year, the Bulldogs ending the year with a record, of 8-12 finishing runner-up to Tri-Valley in the Districts. Six seniors are on this year's team, led by Carlie Lambert and Breanne Manthey. Nelson says a lot of varsity spots are still up for grabs.
One area that Nelson will focus on this season is making the Bulldogs more physical on defense.
Tomorrow night's game in Hayti gets underway at 7:30. Matt Hendrickson will bring you all the action, starting with the pre-game show at 7:10 on Dakota's Best, AM 1390.
