Lady Dogs set school record in road triangular

By ARIY-EL BOYNTON, Sports Editor

The Madison Lady Bulldogs gymnastics team didn't win their triangular against Brookings and Mitchell, but they were very pleased with their final tally on Thursday at Mitchell High School. The Lady Dogs scored 144.300 points, which is a new school record.

"Our previous school record for high team score was 144.15, set at the state meet in 2008; last night we outscored that with a 144.3. The girls have been working so hard to improve their scores and clean up routines," said Lady Dog coach Maridee Dossett. "It's so exciting to see things come together for them at this point in the season."

Madison placed second, Brookings was first with a score of 144.550. Host Mitchell took third with a score of 140.750.

MHS' Laura Blom (37.200) and Lexi Finck (36.600) finished first- and second-place in the all-around. Blom took first in the bars (9.1500).

"Laura had a stellar night last night. She's been working hard to bring herself back to 100 percent, after sitting the first half of the season due to a shoulder injury. Last night she really stepped it up and pulled off a personal best all around score of 37.2," said Dossett. "Lexi continues to be a great leader for us, shining on floor, bars and vault."

Blom and Finck tied for first on the floor with a score of 9.3500. Blom and Finck took second in the vault (9.300). Blom took second on the beam (9.400). Finck tied for second with a score of 9.000 on the bars.

Teamwise, Madison placed second, with a score of 120.150. Brookings was first with a score of 129.400. Mitchell placed third with a score of 98.500.

"The JV Gymnasts had a strong finish to their season last night," said Kindra Wiese, Lady Dogs JV coach. "Brianna Dirks had one of her best competitions of the season and shined on the floor. Tayler Herold had a great night on beam and stuck her beam routine. Over the season it has been fun to watch Maegan Champion, Jordan Thompson and Kenzie Jorgenson improve their skills and confidence level. Tess Pifer was a great leader for our JV gymnasts. Our JV gymnasts are vital to Madison's gymnastics success because they push one another and varsity competitors to be even better."

"It was fun to have the JV end on a high. The record setting team score was a varsity score, but the whole team earned it because those JVers push our varsity girls to be better during practice and at meets," said Dossett.

Madison will compete at the Region 2A championships in Vermillion on Feb. 10.

"Overall we're excited about the outcome and of last night and look forward to the next few weeks, working to get things ready for regions with our remaining varsity team," said Dossett.

The state meet is on Feb. 18-19 in Watertown.
