Bulldogs split at Seizing South Dakota Classic

Madison went 1-1 last night at the Seizing South Dakota Classic at the Dakota State University Fieldhouse. The Madison girls lost to Tri-Valley, while the boys edged the Mustangs in a nail-biter of a game.

Tri-Valley rolled up a 39-16 halftime lead and looked to get an easy win over the Madison girls. But the Bulldogs rallied in the second half, outscoring Tri-Valley in the second half 28-19, before falling 58-44.

Stadium Sports Player of the Game Rachel Bunde led all scorers with 21 points for Tri-Valley. Kellie Boer added 13, while the Mustangs won the rebound battle 40-31. Madison was led in scoring by Carlie Lambert with 9 points and Breanne Manthey and Yui Onodera with 8.

In the nightcap, the Madison boys went on a 9-2 rally to open the game against Tri-Valley, but the Mustangs hung tough, taking the lead briefly in the second quarter and trailing by just three at halftime. After the Bulldogs increased the lead to 10, Tri-Valley chipped away at the lead to 52-50. But a late Ryan Steffenson free-throw sealed the win for Madison 53-50.

Tony Fiegen led all scorers with 25 points for Madison. Trevor Freet earned Stadium Player of the Game honors by nailing all three of his 3-point attempts to finish with 12 points. Trent Graves led Tri-Valley with 14 points while Brennan Welbig added 11.

Both Madison boys and girls travel to Lennox for their next games. The girls take on the Ladybirds Thursday, while the boys tangle with the third-rated Orioles on Friday.
