Madison places fifth at home wrestling invite

Dell Rapids/Baltic sent ten wrestlers to the awards stand as it won the Madison Invitational last Saturday. The Quarriers crowned three individual champions as they scored 185 points in their first-ever appearance at the Madison meet.

Runner-up Parkston scored 160 points as it picked up five individual titles. Winner placed third, while Sioux Falls OGorman was fourth. Host team Madison placed fifth, while West Central, Lennox, Brookings, Kingsbury County, and Harrisburg rounded out the scoring.

One of the three champions for Dells/Baltic was Marcus Murphy. The top-ranked Class A wrestler at 189 pounds, Murphy made quick work of West Centrals Mike Jensen, pinning him in 56-seconds. Dell Rapids Head Coach Craig Jorgenson expects Murphy to make a big impact for the Quarriers this season.

Host team Madison finished just one point out of fourth points, scoring 119 points to OGormans 120. Seven Bulldogs made the awards stand, including seventh-grader Matt Goth. Goth blanked top-seeded Jordan Lindberg of Dell Rapids 5-0 to win the 103-pound title. Other place-winners for the Bulldogs include second-place winner Tom Shoemaker at 119, third-place winners Andy Williams at 135, Mason Riedesel at 215, and Ben Bundy at 285. Jacob Aus at 145 and Corde McLaughlin at 160 finished fourth.

The Bulldogs are home on Tuesday, as they host Howard in the annual Madison Square Garden Night at the Middle School Gym. You can catch the action with Matt Hendrickson and Dale Waba at 7:00 on Dakotas Best, AM 1390.
