Two Madison Bulldog Wrestlers Place at State Meet

Two of Madison's five state-qualifying wrestlers placed at the 2013 State A Tournament held in Watertown this past weekend. As a team, the Bulldogs placed 20th.

Senior Matt Goth placed fourth in the 152-pound division and junior Tyler Currey placed sixth in the 182-pound class.

Goth's first match was a 6-5 win over Pierre's Alec Williams. Then in the quarterfinal match, Brett Bye of Vermillion beat Goth 8-3, but a 10-3 win over Cole Hemmah of Sturgis Brown kept Goth alive.

On Saturday, Goth had a 17-2 win over Peyton Ledbetter of Sioux Falls Washington followed by a thrilling 5-2 decision win over Devon Crandall of Brookings to send him to the third- and fourth-place match.

Goth then met up with Bye again who this time secured an injury default win over Goth. Goth finished the 2012-13 season with an impressive 36-9 record.

Currey opened with decision wins over Payson Dirk of Sturgis Brown 9-3 and Dan Marlette of Sioux Falls Washington 3-2 sending him into the semifinals.

On Saturday, in the semifinal match, Currey lost to Aero Amo of Rapid City Central by major decision 12-2. He then faced Tyler Kleinsasser of Huron and lost 6-0 to him.

In the fifth- and sixth-place match, Currey faced Cole Carlson of Aberdeen Central where Carlson emerged with the 9-3 win. Currey finished the season with an outstanding 40-9 record.

Madison Coach Chris Waba noted that all five Bulldog wrestlers were able to pick up a win at the two-day tournament.

Bulldogs Corey Welbon (195#) finished with a 27-14 record, Blake Gusso (220#) closed the season with a 32-16 record, and Ayson Jones (285#) finished with a 33-16 mark.

Madison placed 20th in the team standings with 28.50 points. Winning the team title was Pierre with 180 points. Rounding out the top 10 were Rapid City Central 159.50, Huron 145, Aberdeen Central 109.50, Spearfish/Lead Deadwood 107, Sioux Falls Roosevelt 105, Rapid City Stevens 97, Sturgis Brown 83, Watertown 75.50, and Dakota Valley 71.
