Bulldogs sweep C-Hawks

It was a clean sweep for the Madison boys and girls basketball teams last Saturday as the Bulldogs traveled to Canton. The Lady Bulldogs won a 55-50 overtime thriller, while the boys took care of the C-Hawks in a 30-point blowout.

Madison took at 12-8 first quarter lead in the girls game and looked to cruise to an easy victory. But Canton erupted for 18 points in the fourth quarter to tie the game at 46 and force overtime. There, Player of the Game Brianna Postma scored 4 key points, including a 2-2 performance from the foul line to lead Madison to a 55-50 overtime win.

Madison head coach Mat Nelson credits the girls for staying focused throughout the game.

Breanne Manthey led Madison with 12 points. Yui Onodera added nine while Postma scored eight as the Bulldogs shot 36-percent in the game. Jaicee Ulmer led Canton with a 24 point night.

The nightcap proved to be anti-climactic as Madisons boys raced out to a 7-0 lead, eventually taking a 36-16 halftime lead. From there, Madison never looked back, extending the lead to over 30 points, eventually winning 66-36.

Head coach Mike Ricke says Madisons size just proved to be too much for Canton.

Tony Fiegen led all scorers with 18 points while Chad White added 15. Player of the Game Andrew Strom had a good night on the boards with 7 rebounds and also had a good defensive game. Ben Short led Canton with 10 points.

The Lady Bulldogs wrap up the regular season Thursday, when they host top-ranked Dell Rapids at the Middle School Gym. The Bulldog boys are off til Friday, when they head to Parkston for a game with the Trojans.
