Football playoff changes discussed

Next year’s football playoffs may look a little different in Classes 11 A and B and in the 9-man ranks. The South Dakota Athletic Directors recently approved several measures to revamp the playoff system.

Under the proposals, playoff teams would play in their region for the first round. The winners would then be seeded out the rest of the playoffs, based on power points. West Central head football coach Kent Mueller feels the plan would give the two best teams in the state the a better chance of meeting in the state championship game.

A measure to seed out the entire playoff structure failed to get approval from the SDIAAA. While Mueller says that would be ideal, he also feels it’ll take time just to get this possible change implemented.

The recommendations will now move on to the SDHSAA Board of Directors for consideration this summer.
