Corn Belt League Gears Up for Season
Posted on Thursday, April 10, 2008
The Corn Belt League held its organizational spring meeting this Tuesday in at the National Guard Armory in Salem.
Twelve teams from eleven towns will gear up for the 2008. They include last years state champion Dell Rapids PBR, state runner-up Dell Rapids Mudcats, Canton, Canova, Colman, Flandreau, Harrisburg, Humboldt, Lennox, Madison, Montrose, and Salem. Each team will play the others twice this year, with the league opener set for Mothers Day.
During the meeting, the league decided to change the selection process for the District tournament. In the past, teams voted for the towns by secret ballot. Now teams will be put on a rotation list in order to determine who will host each year. League vice-president Brent Reilly of Humboldt says the new system is designed to make things more equitable in the selecting a site.
While the new process generally met with approval, other managers have concerns about the change. Lennox manager Brad Javers feels that the league has done a good job in the past with selecting sites and that the change is unnecessary.
Districts will be held in Flandreau, July 25-August 2. Other teams in the rotation will be selected in June. Mitchell will host the State Amateur Baseball tournament, August 6-17.
