Madison girls second after day one of State track

The granddaddy of all South Dakota High School championships got underway yesterday, as Madison hosted the first day of the State A Track championships at Trojan Field.

After Day One, Lennox and Garretson stand on top of the boys and girls standings. Lennox leads the boys with 31 points while second-place Hill City has 19. Tri-Valley is tied for fourth with 18, while Madison has 2. Joey Schreppel placed seventh in the Pole Vault for the Bulldogs.

For the girls, the Blue Dragons used a late afternoon surge to pick up 30 points. Early leader Madison fell to second with 18 while Dell Rapids is in sixth with 14. Katie Breuer took first in the pole vault while teammate Thresa Knapp took second.

While Madison fell behind in the standings, the girls did qualify three relay teams, including the Medley, 400-meter, and 800-meter. Head coach Kevin Decurtains says those relays will have to perform well for Madison to compete for a state championship.

Todays action gets underway at Howard Wood Field in Sioux Falls with field events at 9:00 and running events at 9:30.
