Bulldog girls finish third at State Track Meet

For the second year in a row, the Madison girls track team finished in the top-5 at the State A Track Meet. Saturdays final round took place at Howard Wood Field in Sioux Falls.

Vermillion took the top honors, scoring 60 points. Last years champion, St. Thomas More finished second with 56 points, while the Lady Bulldogs took third with 50.

The Bulldogs trailed Garretson after the first day, but had a solid effort the second day, thanks to a second-place finish in the 400-meter relay, a 5th-place finish in the 1600-medly, and a surprising performance by Katie Breuer in the Long Jump. Head Coach Kevin Decurtains was pleased with how the girls performed.

The boys rebounded from a tough first day to finish the meet with 15 points, good enough for a tie for 18th place. Sioux Falls Christian took the team title with 69 points, followed by Lennox with 51. The 400-meter and 800-meter relay teams finished sixth and seventh, respectively, but Decurtains says the highlight for the Madison boys was junior Skyler Leighton, who finished runner-up in the 110-meter hurdles.

St. Thomas More took the combined team championship for the boys and girls. Outstanding performer awards went to Alexa Duling of Gregory for the girls and Colin Koth of Sioux Falls Christian for the boys.
