The long-time head of the South Dakota Coaches Association is stepping down. Max Hawk of Yankton is stepping down after 40 years at the helm of the organization.
Hawk has actually been president since 1965, when it was called the State Coaches Association and became the president after the organization changed its name in 1967. As a football coach for 38 years, the first eight in Scotland, Hawk is the winningest football coach in South Dakota with 284 wins and 78 losses.
During Hawk's tenure, membership increased from just 100 coaches to over 1500. He's also instrumental in establishing the summer All-Star games, which take place each July in Aberdeen. The association also contributes to Special Olympics, the Make-a Wish Foundation, FCA, scholarships for high school students and insurance policies for its members.
Hawk stepped down September 1st. Former Madison High School and current Sioux Falls Lincoln athletic director Jim Dorman is now the new president.
