The Madison high school golf team had ideal conditions at their invitational yesterday at the Madison Golf and Country Club. And the Bulldogs nearly pulled off an upset over the defending champs from Sioux Falls Christian.
The Chargers took the team title in the 17-team invitational, firing a 335. Madison was one stroke back at 336, followed by Chamberlain and Dell Rapids. Madison coach Joey Leisinger was extremely pleased with how the Bulldogs performed.
Individually, Ben Heller of Aberdeen Roncalli had the low score with a 74. Two-time defending champion Rainey Renyolds of Sioux Falls Christian finished one back with a 75. A pair of Bulldogs also finished in the top-ten as Justin Olson fired a 78 to take fourth, while Mitch Manthey shot an 82 to finish seventh. Leisinger says Manthey was a welcome surprise for the Bulldogs.
Madison was without number-two golfer Shawn Campbell, who is nursing a back injury. Leisinger hopes he'll be back by regions in two weeks. The Bulldogs' next action comes Thursday, when they take on Sioux Falls Roosevelt in Sioux Falls.
