Madison rallies, tops Vermillion

The Madison girls’ basketball team improved to 4-4 on the season last night with a come-from-behind win over Vermillion 40-36. It was the second time both teams played each other this year.

After Madison took an early 15-13 lead, the Tanagers held Madison to just 11 total points in the second and third quarters as they took a 31-26 lead. Madison head coach Mat Nelson says Vermillion did a good job controlling the tempo.

The Bulldogs retook control of the game in the fourth quarter, outscoring Vermillion 14-5 to get the win. Senior guard Kaitlyn Higgins says a big factor in the comebacks was Madison adjusting to Vermillion’s tempo

Higgins led Madison with 12 points, including two crucial three-pointers in the fourth quarter. Mikayla Mc Nary and Christa Paul each had 8 points, while Bailey Milne and Brianna Postma had six rebounds each. Sara Kjose led Vermillion with 12 points, while Hannah Nelich-Arroba had six rebounds.

Madison is back in action Thursday, when it host Flandreau at the DSU Fieldhouse.
