Founded in 1881 as Dakota Normal School, the first teacher education institution in the Dakota Territory, DSU has a proud history of leadership and service. DSU has been identified with teacher preparation for most of its history and has seen many different names. The name Dakota State College was adopted in 1969 and became Dakota State University on July 1, 1989. DSU is still popular for its education of teachers as well as its business, arts and science, health services and technology programs.
DSU developed leading edge computer/information systems degree programs after a request in 1984 by the South Dakota Legislature and the South Dakota Board of Regents to educate leaders for the information age. As a leader in computer and information systems programs, DSU has pioneered the application of computer technology to traditional fields of academic endeavor.
DSU has been included on Yahoo Magazine’s list of the 100 most wired universities in the U.S. and been named the best public baccalaureate college in the Midwest according to U.S. News & World Report magazine for two consecutive years.
